Pomegranate

What to Look For

Pick pomegranates that are well-developed, bright crimson red colour, and smooth.  Avoid spots, cuts, cracks, bruises, or decay.

Pomegranates must be harvested at the correct time, otherwise the seeds of the fruit will turn hard and inedible.

Ideal Storage

  • 5°C
  • 90 - 95% Relative Humidity

Pomegranates can be stored for up to 2 months at 5°C and at 7.2°C for longer periods to avoid chilling injury.

Pomegranates are highly susceptible to water loss and should be stored in plastic liners.

Response to Ethylene

Ethylene exposure stimulates respiration and ethylene production rates, but does not affect quality attributes.  Pomegranates do not ripen after harvest.
