What to Look For

Bulb size, firmness and a mature neck and scales will be the primary factors in quality. Also inspect for greening, sprouting and overall decay in the bulb.

Ideal Storage

  • 65 - 70% Relative Humidity

Mild onions: Typically 15-30 days at 0°C (32°F)
Pungent Onions: Typically up to 6 to 9 months at 0°C (32°F)

At 0°C, mild onions typically last 15-30 days while pungent varieties store far longer from 6-9 months.

Soft water soaked and translucent scales will indicate freezing injury due to long term cold storage.

Response to Ethylene

Exposure to the gas promotes sprouting and growth of decay-causing fungi. Onions are also high storage odour sources and storage odour absorbers.
