What to Look For
The common button mushrooms grow in white to dark brown varieties. The caps should be well rounded and moderately glossy. Absence of the stipe, as well as visible, open gills underneath the cap reveal poor quality mushrooms.
- 0°C - 1.5°C
- 95-98% Relative Humidity
Mushrooms will not last long at higher temperatures, leaving only 5-7 days shelf life at optimal storage and 2 days at 4.5°C. Lack of high humidity results in mushrooms drying out and losing their glossy appearance.
Response to Ethylene
Common mushrooms are not impacted by the gas and therefore do not need to be stored away from ethylene producers. However, mushrooms will absorb odours from other pungent scented produce like onions and garlic.
