What to Look For

The neck should run from 2.5 to 7.5cm before the shoot turns bright green. Green onions should grow straight and uniform in shape while at most being slightly curved or angular.

Green onions remain flavourful for up to 30 days. Storage at 10°C allows for 7 to 10 days shelf life with higher temperatures greatly accelerating yellowing and decay of the leaves.

-1.0°C will induce freezing injury causing bulbs to become soft or gelatinous in texture in the leaves and other tissue, with bacterial soft rot decay rapidly following afterward.

Response to Ethylene

Green onions do not significantly react to ethylene.
