What to Look For

Choose carrots that are crisp and firm with healthy looking tops. Dark orange carrots are optimal as they have higher levels of beta-carotene.

Ideal Storage

  • 95 - 100% Relative Humidity

Mature carrots will last 5 months or longer with close to no decay at 0°C with appropriate humidity.

Carrots packaged in "cello packs" are often immature. These as well as fresh-cut or peeled carrots lose quality much faster lasting only as long as 2-3 weeks. 

Bunched carrots are highly perishable due to the presence of the shoots. With ice, good quality can only be maintained for around 8-12 days or less.

Response to Ethylene

Exposure to ethylene will give carrots a bitter taste.
