Saba Banana
(Musa paradisiaca L.)
The saba ( Platano, Saging, batag) the is most popular and most widely-eaten variety of banana in the Philippines. Its uses are varied – as a popular snack like banana-Q “(fried and/or roasted banana coated with sugar) banana chips.
Super Plantain Banana
This plantain (usually use for cooking) is much favored in Ecuador and the West Indies; used as a staple in their diets. The slightly curved fruit is large and delicious, comparable to the commercial plantains that we know and adore.
Dwarf Cavandish Banana (Musa Acuminata)
This very popular greenhouse banana can bear bunches with up to 90 bananas. They tend to be slightly shorter than the “grocery store” varieties. It will grow to about 8 to 10 feet and has a solid heavy trunk. Juvenile leaves will have some colorful reddish-purple markings, but later leaves will be all green. This Musa is a fast grower.
Namwa Banana
This banana produces larger bunches of fruit. It is tolerant of wilt and less susceptible to wind damage. It should fruit in 10-11 months. The fruit takes 60 to 75 days to ripen. It will produce new sucker in 3-5 months.
Trully Tiny Banana
A miniature version of the Dwarf Cavendish Banana. Grows only 24" tall. Great tasting bananas. Easy to grow, indoors or out! Zone 8-11. Great house or patio plant. Very tasty edible fruit
